Emma Wood, Senior lecturer in Media, Communication and Performing Arts at Queen Margaret University, AND, Director of STEKA, (Step-Kids Awareness Incorporated), a family home for 64 vulnerable children, rescued from abusive situations, based in Blantyre, Malawi, spoke to the Club on her experiences with this Charity.

STEKA was Founded in 2007 by Godknows Maseko and his wife Helen with the goal of removing children from the streets and protecting them from the abuse faced by many living in poverty and on the streets of Malawi.

Emma spoke passionately, and in depth of her experiences working with the Charity in Malawi and the development of a “partnership“ with Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.

Her presentation, enhanced by photos and videos on the involvement and benefits enjoyed both by pupils at Edinburgh and the senior children living in the home in Malawi, was enjoyed by members.
Funding for a Rotary Centre for Vocational, Skill and Community enterprises to be based in Malawi was nearly complete and would add significantly to the personal development of the STEKA family of children and students from Edinburgh visiting Malawi as part of their own development.

In addition, an exchange programme had been established whereby a student from Malawi would have a residential academic year in Edinburgh as part of his/her personal development.
A young man from Malawi enjoying this experience (Gift, by name) accompanied Emma on her visit and participated in the presentation by answering the many questions raised by members.

Brian Buchanan gave the Club’s vote of thanks reflecting the interest and enjoyment members had obtained from both the presentation and the real life answers from Gift.
