New member for Senlac Rotary Club - Kevin Cooper

Wed, Oct 11th 2017 at 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

When Kevin Cooper was inducted into the Rotary club of Senlac on 11th October 2017 he became the club’s sixth new member in a year. The increase in our membership is at odds with a number of clubs that are struggling so perhaps they should be looking at what we do so we can get Rotary to thrive.

Kevin was born in Hastings but grew up in South London until he was 12 when he moved back to Hastings with his family. Leaving education at the age of 16 he managed to secure employment as an electrical apprentice with Booker and Best and spent 7 years with them becoming a qualified electrician in 1997.  He got the highest score in the south east in his final electrical practical exam and was invited to the House of Lords for a presentation and received an award. He left Booker and Best shortly thereafter and worked for Scottish Power in London and the south east on many big projects including Great Ormond Street.

He currently works for AB Electrical, part of the Fuzion4 Group based in St. Leonards, moving to a company where he could  work locally but in the past few months work has taken him as far as Andover and Southampton in Hampshire to the west and Deptford and Bermondsey in South East London.

Kevin now lives in Bexhill-on-Sea with his wife Lisa who works full time at Rother District Council.  Both have been married before and between them have 3 daughters and 1 son ranging in age from 29 to 19 and 5 grandchildren ranging in age from 9 years to 3 months!  Lisa’s youngest daughter, Charlotte, is currently studying Law at Canterbury University and, in theory, still lives with them but the rest have all flown the various nests although they try to catch up as often as they can.

Kevin wanted to join Rotary so that Lisa and he could involve themselves in local community activities and support good causes.  They are hoping to make new friends, have fun and feel that they are making a good contribution to the community.  Kevin hopes to bring his skills, sense of humour, enthusiasm and energy to Rotary.

Outside of home, work and Rotary Kevin’s  main interests and hobbies include spending time with “my lovely wife Lisa”, classic cars, cooking, fine dining, music, holidays, DIY, picnics on the beach and lovely long walks.

Kevin’s nickname is likely to be “The magician”. When learning of a potential new member, one of our long-serving members who, sometimes, is a little hard of hearing, said, on mishearing Kevin’s occupation of electrician, “That must be a first, we’ve never had a magician in Rotary before.”

The club warmly welcome Kevin and Lisa to the world of Rotary and Senlac in particular, and wish them both a happy and rewarding time.
