Young Citizen of the Year
Malek Helmil was awarded a Young Citizen of the Year certificate on 24th August 2017 by President Billy Shields
Malek Helmil, age 18, comes from a refugee family now settled on the Isle of Bute. Malek had a limited knowledge of English on his arrival but has improved this skill and now speaks it well with a hint of a Scottish accent. He is now an important link between two disparate cultures assisting other Syrians to communicate in English. On a recent Royal visit to Rothesay he acted as interpreter when the Duke of Rothesay met a delegation of Syrians.
Malek's leadership skills and popularity amongst his peers and the staff at Rothesay Academy were recognised when he was elected as a school House Captain. He is studying hard to gain qualifications to enter university and study science.
