The Rotary Club of Ormskirk Clocktower have been working with the charity Against Breast Cancer for several years. We are working in our local community by placing bra banks in many sites and collecting donated bras. Our members use their local networks to find locations for these bra banks e.g. in schools, workplaces, libraries sport’s facilities etc. The bras are then stored by a member who arranges for collection by the charity recycling partner when we have a load big enough for collection
The charity’s bra recycling scheme takes unwanted or unloved bras and through their network of bra banks which raises vital funds for pioneering breast cancer research.
The same bras also help to support small businesses in Africa. Together with their recycling partners, our textile recovery project prevents these bras going into landfill before giving them a new lease of life in developing countries such as Togo, Ghana and Kenya, where bras remain too expensive to produce locally.
Successful ventures like this keep many families in developing countries out of poverty whilst providing employment for people at home in the UK. Any bras that are genuinely beyond redemption are dismantled and disposed of properly thereby helping the environment
For every tonne of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives money to fund their research. With over 30 million women in the UK our Club is really helping to make a difference in out community.
