REFLECTIONS ON EISENACH.

Thoughst from Rotarian Ray Wong on the last visit to The Rotary Club of Eisenach.

REFLECTIONS ON EISENACH

Liverpool South club has made a number of visits to Eisenach over the years. Eisenach is a beautiful town with a rich and varied history. It is full of traditional German buildings, some similar to what we would call the Tudor style and others built in the nineteenth century as large gabled and turreted  villas for wealthy inhabitants. There are two magnificent churches worth mentioning; Saint George’s built in the Renaissance style overlooks the main town square; and Saint Nikolai which is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. The main square also contains the town hall where we were met and entertained by the mayor.

Eisenach is a tourist town with two famous historical figures. Johann Sebastian Bach was born there in 1685. He is celebrated in the Bach Museum where  the Director is Jorg Hansen,  a member of Eisenach Rotary club. The other equally important historical figure is Martin Luther who in the privacy of the Wartburg castle translated the Bible from the original Greek text into German, thereby furthering the Reformation.

For any visitor the outstanding “must see” is the Warburg castle; this is over a thousand years old and dominates the surrounding area from its high position overlooking the town. We were given a   tour of the castle, followed by a joint club meeting in the castle restaurant.

The hospitality and friendship shown to us was without equal; all club members who have visited Eisenach will hold fond and enjoyable memories of their visit.
