Kerr Scott: Brian Renwick - MacMillan Centre extension

Thu, Nov 16th 2017 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker.

The Rotary Club met last week under the chairmanship of President Scott Elliot and heard about a Project they keenly support.  Rotarian Kerr Scott introduced Brian Renwick, Fundraiser at NHS Borders for the McMillan Centre Extension.  Brian outlined the problem with up-to-date facts and figures such as there 30,500 new cases of cancer each year in Scotland of which 750 are in the Borders and, it is predicted, will rise to 850 by 2020 and, in total, 47% of the Scottish population will survive their cancer and die of other causes.  This tragic situation was addressed in 2003 when the McMillan Centre was set up at the BGH but improvements are now required and he is fund-raising to address this.  Nine new treatment chairs, two permanent beds and one private room is planned along with an increase in specialised staff.  Fundraising was started this month, work begins in January, 2018 and the refurbishment will be completed by November, 2018.  All this costs money separate from the hospital budget and £800,000 is required which will be raised in the Border Communities by collections, bequests and other means so a massive effort is required.  Brian gave an excellent presentation which evoked questions from the members after which President Scott gave the club's vote of thanks.
Over 80 Xmas shoeboxes were recently collected by Rotarians and their friends and have been sent to Eastern Europe for children there at Xmas.
