Speaker, Thursday, February 8th:
Mark Harrison, a former policeman and local historian, gave a fascinating talk on Whitstable and WW2 in which he described the fortifications which were intended to protect the beaches from invasion. He had an amazing collection of documents, maps and photographs to illustrate his talk. He also briefly described the Tankerton wreck which is of international importance. The wreck, which has been partially excavated and backfilled has been dated to the early 1500’s and is thought to be a Kentish cog. However, there are plans to fully excavate the wreck which is very well preserved under London clay and this will enable much more precise indentification. Andrew B. gave a vote of thanks.
