Speaker, Thursday, February 15th:
Ann Day, the founder and leader of the Samba Band gave a fascinating talk, on the instruments, the team and the charitable activities of the band which was founded eleven years ago. Ann has had a varied career not just as musician but also as a teacher, a furniture restorer and French polisher. The Samba Band currently has fifty members with all kinds of different people ranging in age from 13 to 82 including the lonely and those with learning difficulties. The band supports a number of local charities but particularly the Pilgrim’s Hospice for which it raised £20,000 in two years. Ann gave demonstrations of drumming including sitting on a box and a virtuoso performance on the spoons.
Car Parking, Saturday, February 10th:
Car Parking on Saturday, February 10th was a success despite the cold, miserable weather. Special thanks are due to Marian who provided a quantity of flapjacks which sold our.
Ten-Pin Bowling Evening, Friday, February 23rd:
Sue has circulated to those who have signed up for the evening a current menu from the Thai Orchid restaurant and anyone who has not sent her their menu selection should do so by the end of the weekend. The timings will be 6.00 for 6.30 pm at the bowling and 9.00 at the Thai Orchid, 82 Middle Wall, Whitstable.
Stroke Awareness at Car Parking, Saturday, April 14th:
Sarah is organising Stroke Awareness at the car parking on Saturday, April 14th and needs volunteers to help with taking blood pressures. There is a form for car parking in the folder and if you can help Sarah with taking blood pressures please enter ‘BP’ under the shift you can manage. Sarah also needs to borrow blood pressure monitors on the day. Godfrey is very kindly making his motor home available.
Visit to Apeldoorn, June 8th to 10th:
It is our turn to visit Apeldoorn this year on June 8th to 10th. The Dutch are great hosts and, for those who have not been to Apeldoorn before, will make the Club very welcome and will lay on a very enjoyable weekend. Andrew B., who thoroughly recommends taking part, needs to know who will be going as our hosts need to have time to organised accommodation. The drive to and from Apeldoorn takes about five hours and lifts will be organised for those who do not want to take their cars or who are going alone. There is a form in the folder so please sign up as soon as possible if you would like to go.
Whitstable Harbour Day, Saturday, August 11th:
Whitstable Harbour Day will be held on August 11th with a nautical theme and the Board proposed to the Club that we take part with two spaces and this was agreed unanimously. Sue will send off the necessary application.
Dave C. will there with his ukulele and Ron will shake the moths out of his pirate outfit.
Donation to Support the Work of Tony Giles:
Tony Giles is a surgeon, who has spoken to the Club and who voluntarily works in Africa to help repair hare lips and other facial deformities which destroy the lives of African children. Tony is keenly supported by Pippa who will be joining his team of twenty people for nearly three weeks in April. Tony and all his volunteers work unpaid and meet all their own expenses. On behalf of the Board, Andrew B. proposed a donation of £500.00 to support Tony and his work and this was agreed unanimously. The donation will be made to the Lost Fund as Tony is no longer involved with Mercy Ships.
Donation to Festability:
SNAAP and other local charities for disabled children are organising a music festival at Quex Park especially for disabled children and their families. They have appealed for a donation towards the setting up costs and the Board recommended that the Club donate £500.00 which was proposed by Robert S., seconded by Paul and agreed unanimously.
Master of Alms:
Paul, or his doppelganger as he was minuted as being both absent and present at the recent Board meeting, managed to leave your impecunious secretary even more hard up as a result. However, he was not alone…
Raffle:
Andrew B’s guest, Chris, won a bottle of wine. Paul then won a bottle of martini.
