PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I can’t believe that I am half way through my term of office and for that matter where has 2017 gone.  Perhaps it’s an age thing but time really does seem to fly!

Our Charter Night on 29^th November was well attended and the Police & Crime Commissioner for Cumbria, Peter McCall gave us an amusing yet thought provoking speech.  I am sincerely grateful for all those who worked so hard to make the evening such a success.

Similarly it was good to see so many of you at our Christmas Lunch and full marks to those who entered into the festive spirit.  It was particularly good to have Gill McNally with us and I am indebted to Mike for organising such wonderful and amusing entertainment.  A fantastic £10,000 was raised from the Golf Day and the Ferret Racing evening and this was shared amongst Eden Valley Hospice, Hospice at Home, Life Education and the GN Air Ambulance so we were delighted that representatives of each of these charities were also able to join us on this occasion.

The first outing of the Santa sleigh will be on Friday 15^th December and the next on Christmas Eve.  More volunteer elves would be helpful on Christmas Eve so if anyone felt they could give an hour or two that would be most appreciated.  Please contact Michael Pearson for more information.

I am being a bit of a ‘humbug’ this year in that I am not sending any Christmas cards but giving a donation to charity.  However I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all most sincerely for all the help, support and advice you have given me and to wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and all good wishes for 2018.

CHARTER NIGHT

AN EVENING OF SURPRISES

85 Rotarians and Guests from as far away as Appleby and Whitehaven and beyond gathered at The Auctioneer Carlisle to celebrate the 95^th Charter Anniversary Dinner of the Rotary Club of Carlisle.

President Nicki Quayle extended a warm welcome to everyone before introducing her top table guests; The Mayor of Carlisle Trish Vasey, Mayoress Elaine Donnelly, District Governor Lawrence Branyan, Rotarian Amanda O’Garrow, Asst. District Governor Wendy Aldred, Past District Governor Kevin Walsh, Cumbria Police & Crime Commissioner Peter McCall, Councillor John Mallinson.

Past President Rev. Dr. Peter Tiplady in the Grace before the meal reminded us to think about others, and those parts of the world where extreme hardship exists.

Soon everyone was engaged in conversation as the meal was served. This was very much an occasion for the meeting of old friends from other clubs and an opportunity to catch up with news of others. We hope that the included pictures will have captured some of the occasion. The second part of the evening followed the traditional pattern of Toasts to RI, Rotary GB&I and District 1190, the Rotary Club of Carlisle, and The Visitors. President Elect Ian spoke of the changes that had taken place within Rotary since he first became a member, suggesting that further changes could result next year. He encouraged Rotarians to enjoy the fellowship and not be overtaken by too many rules. District Governor Larry brought the customary greetings and reminded us of the need for compliance. Asst. District Governor Wendy highlighted this year’s Rotary theme “Rotary: making a difference” mentioning some of the ways in which the Rotary Club of Carlisle had made a difference through the founding of the Eden Valley Hospice and the Talking Newspaper for the Blind its other projects.

Now for the surprises, President Nicki in her reply mentioned the Rotary motto Service above Self reading out two citations before asking District Governor Larry to present firstly a 50 year long service award to Past President and PHF Peter Atkinson who was for more years than he cares to remember the youngest member of the Carlisle club, that isn’t the case now.

The second presentation was in recognition of 25 years’ service to the Carlisle and District Talking Newspaper for the Blind, and it was a very surprised Jenny MacLeod who was called forward to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship which she accepted most graciously.

Our Guest Speaker Peter McCall Cumbria Police & Crime Commissioner introduced his talk using the heading “We not they”. He paid tribute to Rotary worldwide and its work in supporting communities (or the community) and gave tribute to the work of the Cumbria Police Force (Constabulary) and the many volunteer staff who work in partnership getting on with the job and helping others. All this culminates in making a difference to people’s lives. These are challenging times “We not they” the WE is US and We Can Make a Difference.

The evening closed with the President recording the Club’s thanks to our Guest Speaker.

CONGRATULATIONS

To Ken and Sheila Dewar are to be heartily congratulated on achieving 59 years of marriage.

CARLISLE REFUGE

Following Rotary Xmas lunch this Wednesday, Barbara & I delivered to the Refuge all the bags of 'goodies' that members had kindly donated. It goes without saying they were gratefully received and we left the staff busily sorting through everything to put it into appropriate bundles for the different men, women & children who have sought refuge. We should all have a sense of 'good feeling', particularly at this time of year, that we are not in the shoes of those who find themselves, not always of  their own making, seeking refuge, and how lucky & glad they are to have such a place to go to.

It is also worth noting, if we do this another year, that they do not like cash donations as it is not as easy to allocate cash as a tin of beans may be! However having been forewarned about this, we spent the two cash donations we had been given into food items before going to The Refuge.

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING

The Rotary Club of Carlisle held a Special General Meeting on 6^th December. Here is a summary of the meeting, but please note that these are not the minutes of the meeting which will be circulated by our Hon Secretary in due course.

The SGM:

• Confirmed appointment Ian Watson as President 2018-19

• Confirmed the appointment of Norman Butler as Vice President 2018 -19

• Elected Mike McNally as Hon. Secretary for 2018/2019 and Ellis Amos as Hon. Treasurer 2018/2019

• Elected 3 voting delegates and deputies for the Annual   Conference 2018: President, President Elect & Secretary

• Adopted the General accounts for the year ended 30 June 2017 

• Received the Club’s Charity Accounts for 2016/17

   

  We should all be grateful that these meetings run as smoothly as they do and our officers should be congratulated on this achievement.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH

Wednesday 13^th December

There was much festive spirit as 53 members and guests gathered for our Christmas Lunch. On this occasion, President Nicki was joined on the top table by representatives of the 4 charities who had received our support following the successful summer fund raising events, the Great Ferret Race and the Charity Golf Day.

After an excellent turkey lunch the President gave our annual Christmas box and vote of thanks to the Shepherds Inn staff who look after us so well throughout the year. They really deserve their reward for coping with us every Wednesday, wondering how we will react to the colour of soup or the chef’s latest meat sauce prepared for our delight. Some of us are not easily pleased!!

The post lunch entertainment was superb as usual, led by a sketch from Hoggard and McNally. Set in 15^th Century Florence, Medici, played by Hoggard was not too happy with his artist Ravioli (McNally) who had interpreted the nativity scene somewhat differently from his master’s preference. The performances were brilliant but the costumes and the painting left a lot to be desired!!

There followed equally entertaining presentations by Derek Heyes who in his best Lancashire accent gave us a Stanley Holloway monologue entitled ‘Halt who goes there’ and Paul Harris Fellow, Jenny MacLeod gave us a reading entitled ‘Christmas’ by John Betjeman. Many thanks to you all.

Once again our Secretary was not going to let the audience off scot free as he had set a taxing Yuletide quiz to keep us quiet over lunch. Our table truly struggled, to say the least, but I noted that the educated bunch consisting of Councillors and ex Council hierarchy managed a score of 20/30.

Finally  President Nicki announced the winner of the Christmas Bonus Ball prize, a whopping £100 to the lucky person, being Rotarian Peter Yates.  Oh Boy, I think I need to buy more numbers Derek!

Another excellent day of fellowship enjoyed by one and all !

RYPEN

Rotary Youth Programme of Enhancement.

 We were very pleased to have feedback from 14 and 15 year olds, Ben, Sophie and Nicole, who had attended Monday to Friday Rypen courses funded by this club.

They were introduced by Tracy Studholme, the Senior Pastoral Tutor at Trinity School, and had been selected from 210 year-10 pupils to attend the courses .

It was amusing to hear their tales of camping, cooking outdoors, building rafts, ghyll scrambling and team games, mostly in wind and rain, which they managed to survive with great good humour.

 All of them expressed the view that they had benefited from increased self-esteem and confidence as was evidenced by their ability to stand in front of twenty five, rather ageing, Rotarians, and speak with smiles and self-assurance – something which will stand them in good stead in later life.

They were most appreciative of the Rotary involvement and we, in turn, enjoyed their visit. It was good to note that our money had been so well spent.

SANTA SLEIGH

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Santa was absolutely brilliant – yet again he brought joy to dozens of children. It is a treat to see him in action.

Meanwhile his elves collected £320 last Friday – up from £270 last year.

The Sleigh always brings its interesting challenges – this time at the end of the evening it was the task of separating the sleigh from the Land Rover towing it. The rest of the team stood in amazement as it was Nicki who lifted the sleigh off the towbar. Is there no end to our President’s talents?

We are taking the Sleigh out again on Christmas Eve at Lowry Hill. More Elves welcome!

    500 Santa runners were raising money for The Hospice Jigsaw Appeal.
