Weekly Meeting at SCCC


The meeting opened with a minute's silence in memory of founder member David Wilcox who died a few days ago. A thanksgiving service will be held on Monday 5th February at 2 30pm at St. Andrew’s Church, Wiveliscombe.

43 club members and one guest had gathered to hear Jeffrey King talk about the life of a surgeon in the 1850's. Mr King came attired in top hat and frock coat, working dress for Victorian surgeons, and showed examples from two sets of contemporary Surgical instruments, one of which had been used following one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. He described typical amputation procedures and an operation following a depressed skull fracture.

Paul Mullins then introduced his guest and possible prospective member Gavin Brown, a local chartered accountant.

The president read a letter from the president of a German club in District 1890 who's son attends Kings College seeking accommodation for the 16 year old from 10th - 18th February. Contact Colin if able to assist.

The international Chair reported briefly on a meeting with the head-mistress of Queen's College about the Gambia project. It is likely that neither party will have further direct involvement. More details will be reported next week.

Reminders were given about the Race Evening organised by Malcolm Derry on 16th February and the Speaker Dinner on March 24th. Tickets, priced £40, should be on sale next week.

The Ball Draw was won by Jas Shorney who had left early so £50 next week.

Bird Bath presentation at Abbeyfield

Taunton Vale Rotary Club has recently celebrated their 40th Charter anniversary. To mark the occasion the Inner Wheel Club of Taunton Vale have donated a bird bath, and this was handed over to Abbeyfield Residential Home in Bishops Hull.
