Talk by Sandra Rees at the Downe Arms

Safer Communities

Sandra Rees has previously worked in close liaison with the North Yorkshire Police Service in dealing with Domestic Violence. She is a past director of The Cambridge Centre which was a local charity providing support for those experiencing the effects of substance misuse. Currently she is the Community Safety and Safeguarding Manager for Scarborough Borough Council.

She informed the meeting of her work where she is dealing with a wide range of abuse, using the Castle and North Bay Wards of Scarborough as an example and from which she had immediately left for our meeting, following work with the Police and residents of those areas.

Abuse takes the form of sexual exploitation of children and adults, slavery in work practices, trafficking, illegal drug dealing and domestic violence in addition to many other areas where humans are preyed upon by their fellows. She receives strong community support from Trish Kinsella, CEO of The Rainbow Centre with whom the Cavaliers have a long and close working association. Regular meetings are held with the many other agencies involved in this work.

Sandra went on to say that most people can observe a situation and experience a gut feeling that there’s something untoward about it. She pointed out that this should not be ignored, or assumed that those in authority are aware of it, but should be immediately reported, as this may be the first intimation of someone in deep and serious trouble. Collated intelligence from several sources can be extremely valuable in seeing the whole picture and hopefully removing someone from exploitation.

It is apparent that Scarborough is not the quiet, safe area that many may have thought of and like all other towns and cities harbours many evil activities. JM

Safer Communities 2.

The presentation gave me a knee jerk reaction to the presentation in that our pleasant and classic seaside resort enjoyed by many since the coming of the railways has beneath the beating heart a rotten core of drug culture child slavery and prostitution with gangs of eastern European crime masters . All is known by the authorities to be imported from other cities and yet evidence to convict is difficult .

The message was to be vigilant and report unusual activities to 101 or during office hours
