The Great North Big Band Jazz Festival
Tue 23rd January 2018 at 1.00 pm - 2.00 pm
Bill Watson gave us a very interesting talk about the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival held every year at Sunderland University.
Bill explained how important it is to provide young people with the opportunity to learn and play music. In todays cash strapped environment there are fewer bands and fewer opportunities for young people to play an instrument. An important part of the festival is to provide young people with a forum where they can meet peers and play music along with an element of competition.
The Big Band Jazz Festival will start the evening of 2 March this year followed by two days of music and competition. Bill stressed all are welcome to attend.
Bill also played some numbers for us including some Duke Ellington all accompanied ably by Kenneth Howe on keyboard. This was well received by all of us and some of the hotels other customers as well who were looking on through the windows.
Terry Walton was pleeased to provide Bill with a donation towards the festival costs.
