It is with great sadness that we report the recent death of Mike Sands. Mike was already in hospital, very unwell from a stroke, when he suffered a further stroke and died a few days later, on 6th January 2018. Mike joined Hadleigh Rotary Club in 2003 on moving from Yorkshire where he had been a member of a Bradford club. Mike was an enthusiastic Rotarian and participated fully in the life of the Club. He served two terms as President - 2006/07 and 2011/12. He also enjoyed playing Father Christmas during Christmas collections and was very good at his job! Mike was one of the Club's most regular attenders and joined in all the activities, with his last appearance being at the Christmas Party at the White Hart just before he fell ill. He will be very much missed and at this difficult time members' thoughts are with Kate and the family.
A celebration of Mike's life was held in St Mary's Church in Hadleigh on 22nd January. Entrance music - 'If Ye Love Me' by Thomas Tallis, was sung by Serendipity, and Kate's sister Margaret James sang Blackbird by Lennon-McCartney. Eulogies were given by Tony Rose, a life-long friend, and by Belinda, Mike and Kate's daughter. Their other daughter, Zoe, read the poem 'Oh the Wild, Wild Moors' by Edwin Waugh. Caleb, Belinda's son, played his guitar.
The family very kindly asked for donations, in memory of Mike, to be given to the Rotary Club of Hadleigh's Charitable Trust Fund.
