December has been a busy month for Club members, especially bearing in mind their many other commitments at this time of year.
Improving Life Chances in Seacombe (ILCS)
We have had some movement on this project, with our meeting with the Reader Organisation at Calderstones Park on 7 December, which we hope will lead to further Rotary involvement in this worthwhile project, not just in support of our Seacombe initiative, but also more broadly across the Rotary District and, possibly, nationally. We also donated £1,120.00 towards the provision of hampers in Seacombe, and turned up to distribute them (although, in the event, our assistance in this way was not needed). I am hopeful that 2018 will see us able to expand our involvement with this project, working alongside the Rotary Clubs of Birkenhead and Royden Revolve, our own Satellite Club of Penny Bridge and Wallasey Inner Wheel, and also with the cooperation of Wallasey Village in Bloom.
Service projects
The final figures for the Shoebox appeal were very encouraging, and I know from my own observations what a very high standard of contents and packing were achieved this year. This project involves a lot of organisation and hard work, and Manojit and his team are to be congratulated on their achievement.
1 December saw the first of our Christmas activities, with the Oldershaw Concert being a great success. On the next day, we carried out stewarding duties at the Wallasey Village Fair, and this was a hugely-valuable exercise, not just in itself, but in the way in which it brought the Club to public notice.
On 14 December, when Lois Bradley came to talk to us about Hoylake Cottage, I was delighted to be able to present a cheque to her, and also to present a cheque to Mandy Upton from Community Spirit. The next day saw the Morrisons bag pack when again we were in the public spotlight and able to raise further charitable funds.
The “plant a tree” project is now complete, with 210 trees planted locally. 160 have been split equally between Clare Mount Specialist Sports College and Elleray Park School, with the rest being taken by Club members.

Our coverage in local media remains sadly absent, despite our best efforts. David Hyde and Christina Spencer are going to continue to seek some coverage for the Club in 2018. Wish them luck!
Membership
I can only repeat what I wrote last month. Michael Emberton and his team are continuing to plan for our next new membership event, and if I am very hopeful that that will result in the recruitment of some more members with the enthusiasm that the last tranche brought with them.
New meeting ideas
Our Christmas-themed month included a sherry and mince pies party, a Christmas party and a Christmas quiz, with a trip to Liverpool Empire to see the wholly-unseasonal (but enjoyable) “Crazy for You” to fill in the programme. As I note above, a busy month!
Penny Bridge
On 8 January, Penny Bridge will be holding their first meeting of the year, at which DG Beryl will be present. Annette and I will be attending, and I am trying to discover what ability there may for other Club members to attend, as space will be limited.
