Rotakids raise money to end Polio

Raising money to eradicate polio

ROTAKIDS RAISE AWARENESS & FUNDS TO END POLIO NOW

The Rotakids at Whitchurch Primary School have been learning about polio and how Rotary together with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is fighting to eradicate this crippling disease worldwide.

With the support of a District grant Rotakids intend to establish a quiet area in the school grounds. The grant has enabled a bench and planter to be bought; the Rotakids are asking all year 6 pupils to put forward name suggestions for the bench.

On Wednesday 15th November, even though it was a wet day the Rotakids committee together with parents planted 2300 purple crocus corms in the quiet area. They are all now eagerly awaiting to see the purple crocuses peep through the grass.

On the 1st December Rotakids sold books and toys at the PTA Christmas Fair and managed to raise a staggering £120 in three hours. All items not sold at the Christmas Fair were gratefully received by the Barnardo’s Charity shop in Rhiwbina. Rotakids decided in consultation with the PTA that the money raised would be used to purchase 3 boxes of purple crocus lapel pins.

During week commencing 23rd January the Rotakids sold purple crocus lapel pins at the entrance to the school every morning and afternoon. They managed to collect £302. Thanks to the generosity of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation every £1 donation received will generate £3. The Rotakids £302 will consequently be increased to £906 which will vaccinate 2718 children for life and help to end polio.

Well done Rotakids a very rewarding project completed.
