As part of the ongoing campaign by Rotary and Stroke UK, Fleet Rotary held it's annual Stroke Awareness Day in the Hart Shopping Centre, Fleet, on Saturday 13th April 2019.

Members of the public were invited to have an immediate blood pressure check, the aim of which was to identify those who have a high risk of a stroke, and to give them appropriate advice.

During the day, 80 members of the public were tested. Of that number, 59 were told that no further action was necessary, 20 were advised to have a follow-up with their GP within 1 month, and 1 'urgent' case advised to contact their GP within the following week.

These results mirror our historic results from previous years, with nearly 30% being given advisory advice.

Medically qualified local volunteers were in attendance during the day to conduct the tests, and our thanks go to them for their help and enthusiasm. Without their help this important event would not take place.

In general discussion with the public, it is evident that very few knew the prevalence of 'Stroke' - 1 in 6 according to Stroke UK. This permitted us to stress that although they may be one of the lucky 5, they should understand the FAST advice, because they may well come across someone having a stroke, and needing their instant help.
