Jim Walker: Andrew Jepson - Stobs Camp Part 2

Thu, May 24th 2018 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker

At last week's meeting of the Rotary Club President Scott Elliot welcomed Andrew Jepson to hear of the latest progress of the Stobs Camp Project which started two years ago and involves a large number of volunteers and also senior pupils from Borders' Schools.  In an excellent illustrated talk he revealed that only one hut remains on the site, the rest having been sold off and removed 50 years ago. Considerable effort has been made to trace their present whereabouts and have them preserved.  The newest club member, Jane Moore-Cox revealed that one is being used as Makerstoun Village Hall, Kelso, which was welcome news to Andrew.  It is a massive and important project and has attained national interest and one of the aims is to resurrect the memorial stone at the site of the former POW's cemetery although the bodies were removed some time ago to Cannock Chase Military Cemetery and re-interred there.  Past President Jim Walker introduced the speaker and gave the club's vote of thanks.
Several members and wives were involved at the Borders Schools Primary 5 day at Springwood Park, Kelso highlighting country and agricultural pursuits.
