Rock and Roll Bingo Evening with a curry supper

This was the Club’s first attempt at running a Rock and Roll Bingo Game and it proved to be a great success as well as really good fun. Instead of numbers being called out as in a normal game of bingo, there were 15-20 seconds bursts of toe-tapping, bum wiggling sing along songs, mainly from the 1960's, although a few were a decade or two earlier and some a decade later. The numbers on the bingo cards were replaced with artists and song names. So with the card in one hand and a pen in the other, the rock and rollers listened to the excerpts being played and if the song was on their card, they crossed it off. The aim was to get a line – for which a cash prize of £5 was on offer – and then go on and try to get a full house. A £20-note was awaiting anyone with a full house.

In all, 3 games were played and “the oldest swingers in town” had a really good time.

The event, starting at 7.15pm, was held at the Supermarine Club House and a cool £460 was raised for Rotary charities. Richard Long played the songs and Alan Fletcher was the MC. In fact, it was Alan and Linda Fletcher who had spent much of the day at the Club House making it ready for the evening. The tickets cost £15 and included a delicious chicken curry supper complete with rice, poppadoms, naan bread and mango chutney. The caterers were Outsauce of Coleshill. Wine, beer, soft drinks and nibbles were also available.

All-in-all, something the Club might well repeat in the not-too-distant future.

Rotary’s second major donation, of £208,000, was handed over on 7th July 2021 when local Rotarians visited the Great Western Hospital to view the build progress of the nearly completed radiotherapy unit.

Giving money and support to the people in Swindon & district who need it most

We went to the races in March. It was a meeting with 10 races, 8 riders in each. It wasn’t at Epsom, or Haydock Park, or just up the M4 at Newbury. It was, of all places, in Wanborough Village Hall.
