ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA)

How we help support local youngsters to build a better future for themselves.

The Club sponsored three candidates this year, Harriet  Coomber, Oliver Hilditch and William  Cage, who all came to one of our breakfast meetings to tell club members about their experience.  They were well prepared, articulate and ready to participate.  We were proud of them!

The Club's principal RYLA coordinator Teresa Hounsham said

"This one week course teaches leadership skills to young people, aged between 15 and 18. Communication skills are also nurtured and there is considerable emphasis on teams; how they work, how to get the best out of team members and how to get them to work together successfully.  The course builds confidence with a huge range of activities, both practical and intellectual, aiming to push participants out of their familiar comfort zones into trying new things such as the high ropes course or public speaking"

One of the students said " This was a fantastic opportunity for me  to meet new friends , it helped improve my confidence levels by taking me way outside my normal comfort zone. I learnt so much about the importance of good team work to successfully complete unfamilar tasks . It was a really fun week."

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership programme co-ordinated by Rotary Clubs around the world. Each year thousands of young people aged between 13 and 30 years participate in the programme.

Our local RYLA event (which has an age range of 14+ to 18 years) takes place over 5 days and includes presentations, activities and workshops covering a variety of topics, including:

  • Leadership fundamentals and ethics
  • Communication skills
  • Problem-solving and conflict management
  • Community and global citzenship.

All the costs (approx. £400 per student) are covered by Rotary, with clubs sponsoring local students to attend.

As a Club we look to sponsor two students each year with the expectation that they will revisit the Club and tell us about their experience. The difference in the 'before' and 'after' individual is often remarkable, and is very rewarding to see.
