Sand dam

Stage 2 of the Sand dam completed

The sand dam which was partly supported by the Club has now completed its second stage with the provision of a deep seated ‘well’ that goes down nearly 6m from the dry river bed to the rock floor. The sand behind the dam wall also goes down to the rock floor. This retaining sand of the river bed holds water that spreads back and wide up stream and at the same time will now enter the well which will mean that 4500 people in the community can access water throughout the dry season. The river can remain dry for six months and water is very difficult to obtain which means a lot of walking for water which is unlikely to be clean. The water in the well is self filtered by the sand. The essential mineral silts in the river when in full flow continues to flow down stream as it is not retained by the dam wall. Water can be obtained using a bucket, but it is hoped that a pump will be fitted soon.
