Jack Swanston: Gordon Short - Hawick Resilience Group

Thu, May 17th 2018 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Weekly meeting with guest speaker.

Rotarians met last week with President Scott Elliot in the chair and welcomed Robin Mason to the meeting as he made a stop-over while passing through.  Rotarians had been busy in the town and Vice President Mairhi Trickett said she had attended the Primary Schools swimming gala and had presented the medals which the club had provided.  Ron Sutherland and Sandy Bannerman had also judged the High School's art exhibits which will go on to the finals of the District Art Competition at Eyemouth on 3rd October.
Past President Jack Swanston introduced the speaker Gordon Short who told the club about Hawick Resilience Group's activities. A new organisation, of which he is the local co-ordinator, is one of 44 such groups in the Borders controlled by Scottish Borders Council and Community Councils.  They help by assisting the emergency services and cover all aspects of community work like clearing footpaths of snow and any emergency that crops up.  The team of volunteers was formed 5 years ago and they can turn their hand to anything from locating the nearest defibrillator to first aid and are based at the Salvation Army Citadel in Croft Road where training exercises are held and equipment is kept.  Many questions ensued after which the President gave the vote of thanks.
