Breast Cancer Haven

On 10^th October Jessica Zubaidi gave us a talk on the work of Breast Cancer Haven, a charity which supports those who have been affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common of all the known cancers and will affect about 1 in 8 women over their life. Around 400 men are diagnosed each year.

It is a national charity with five centres with another one about to open; our nearest is in Wessex, which covers the south coast, the centre that our speaker operates from. It opened in 2015 and so far has helped about 750 people from West Sussex. They are now planning an outreach day in our area, details of which will be on their web site.

The Haven is a haven and not a hospital and is a converted house. Services offered are acupuncture, medical herbalist scar massage, group discussion and yoga plus many more.  There are four paid staff, two of which are funded by McMillan’s, a charity that works closely with the Haven.

Although there are five centre’s, each one has to raise its own funds. In March 2018 they are planning “The Big Tea Cosy” with tea parties happening around the South Coast. We hope to support this so look out for details in the New Year.

We were told that Rotary Clubs have funded their garden furniture.

An interesting talk. We all know of someone who has suffered from breast cancer and it was good to become aware of the services provided by the Haven in providing support. Look out for our Big Tea Cosy event next March.
