Visit to Stanley Ferry
Wed 25th July 2018 at 10.45 am - 2.30 pm
John Barrow organised a visit to the Stanley Ferry to see the Canal Lock-Gate Workshops which was followed by lunch at the Three Horse Shoes pub in Oulton
We had a very interesting visit to Stanley Ferry (near Wakefield) to see the Canal Lock-Gate Workshops. We were shown the process from the raw timber arriving to the completed gate leaving the workshop. Each gate is custom designed and built. Even if a gate has previously been made for that lock it has to be re-designed each time a new one is required (about every 25 years) as the canal walls move and wear.

The History Online is a superb Pictorial Record of how things used to be – well worth a long browse !
We then had lunch at The Three Horse Shoes, Oulton (which we had previously visited after the Oldfield Rhubarb tour).
