The club heard a brief update from Dr Andrew Blaikie from the University of St Andrews. Andrew leads a team at the university’s Global Health Team which has continued development of the Arclight. This is a solar powered ophthalmic diagnostic device the size of a mobile phone which can be used in rural areas in, for example, Africa, India and the Far East. Early diagnosis is vital to the elimination of avoidable sight loss and Arclight has an important role to play in this work.
The Rotary Club of St Andrews is working with this team in support of a project to deliver product and train professionals in Malawi with the ultimate intention of making Arclight devices available throughout the country.
Dr Blaikie expressed his thanks for the substantial funds the club has donated and in particular the £5000 raised by the recent Look Who’s Talking event with Gregor Townsend and Scott Lawson. He explained the current status of the project and the plans for the future.
President Kim Keble-White thanked Andrew for the helpful insight into this valuable international humanitarian initiative and pledged the club’s continued support.
