Thought for the Day

Inspired by Radio 4 programme, Peter Davidson shared some of his fun thoughts

The club were recently treated to a hilarious compilation of anecdotes from Rotarian Peter Davidson, especially on the perils of travelling.

Peter assembled them in a manner similar to the long running radio series “Thought for the Day”, which began in 1939 with the poignant title of “Lift up your Hearts”.

Amongst the many humorous moments described by Peter, his recollection of hillwalking with a party of walkers, under the leadership of a soon to be army officer, who fearing worsening weather, ordered the party to turn back. The fact that they then, shortly after, arrived at the top of the mountain, provided relief that at least, they now knew where they were!

More recently, whilst travelling by overnight sleeper to arrive in London, Peter and his wife were looking forward to seeing the city in the clear early morning.  When they awoke however, they were startled to look out the window, only to see green fields and distant hills. Unfortunately, Storm Caroline had played havoc with the rail network overnight and they were in fact only as far as Penrith!

In his vote of thanks, Angus Mitchell complimented Peter on his highly entertaining talk but added that as an artillery man himself, the army officer in question must have been from the infantry!
