Rotary Club of South Foreland: Suzanne Takes Over

Forty members, friends and guests attended the recent Handover from 2017/2018 President David Gilchrist to 2018/2019 President Suzanne Taylor-Warren.  Guest of honour was Shirley Blackman whose husband, Richard, died in April and is much missed by the club.  After a welcome by Master of Ceremonies John Dunkley, an excellent meal was enjoyed by all.  This was followed by President David’s final address before handing over to his successor.

A School Chaplain and Religious Education teacher for 28 years, ten of them at Dover College, David took this opportunity to give ideas on his Christian belief.  We all know that we will die but Christ’s death and resurrection gives the promise of a world beyond this life: death is a doorway to a new and fuller life.  While many people may not consider themselves to be religious they do have faith and a code of beliefs by which they live; in the Rotary organisation respect for the individual whatever their beliefs or religion is important.  We respect David for his commitment to his faith and for his hard work over the past year.

In her handover address Suzanne thanked David for his year, and those who organised the Handover Evening, particularly Meal Steward Andrew Eberlein.  She was honoured to lead the club in 2018/2019 and delighted that Janet Dagys would be working with her as President Elect. Suzanne went on to outline her wishes for the coming year: to have fun, be happy, grow as a club, raise money for charity, increase our community footprint, improve communications and be an inspiration to others.  Her chosen charity is Emmaus which works to end homelessness, an aim that Suzanne is passionate about: in England there are 300,000 homeless people, including 80,000 ‘sofa surfing’ children.

The club has a fun-packed programme for what will be a busy, exciting and challenging year.  For information see: www.RotaryInDover.org
