Sandcastle Competition 2018

Fri, Jul 13th 2018 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Another day of glorious sunshine on the West Sands at St Andrews…..and another cracking sandcastle competition attended by more than 40 youngsters.

As always, the standard of sandcastle construction was of the highest order, ranging from Shell Island, Volcano Explosion, and Messi the Loch Ness Monster to many more exotic creations.

Organisers of the event, The Rotary Club of Kilrymont St Andrews, this week engaged the services of Stephen Gethins, MP for North East Fife, as judge, jury and presenter of prizes.

He awarded first place in the 4+ group category to the McCardel family from East Kilbride. Their monstrous “Hungry Caterpillar” threw a scare into even the adults!!

Thanks to Jannettas St Andrews for their generous 1st prize voucher.

Winner in the individual competition was 9-year-old Aliyah McMillan from Dairsie, with her very imaginative “Scrabble” design. Second prize went to Max McKiddie (5) from Glasgow – who built his representation of St Andrews!

In the Groups of maximum 4 contenders, the prize went to “Croc Run”, conceived by Beth (8) and her dad Thomas Cochrane from St Andrews. Next in line were Gabi (6), Jess (5) and their mum from way up north in Moray with (using as many shells as they could find on the sands) “Shell Island”.

In a 3rdbut well-deserved place were Chloe (6) and Haydn (11) Guy, from Braemar, who devised the excellent “Crab Castle”.

Stephen Gethins thanked all for taking part and helping to contribute to the many charities supported by the Rotary Club of Kilrymont St Andrews.

The Summer Sandcastle Competition takes place every Friday at 11.00 during the school holidays.
