Rise against Hunger meal pack event 2018 in Braehead

President Edith Sterrik, Ritchie Cameron and Lindsay Smith attended Rise against Hunger 2018 in Braehead on Saturday 21st July 2018.

The task was to add a vitamin sachet, soy, lentils and rice into a plastic bag.The sachet was fortified with 23 vitamins and minerals. The bags were then weighed and sealed by other teams. One and a half litres of boiling water is needed for preparation. Each bag feeds six people.

A production line of groups of four or five Rotarian were formed to take scoops of soy, lentils and rice from large containers and add them into a plastic bag via a large funnel. We were soon up to speed as we coordinated our movements to fill the bags at maximum speed. Two and a half hours later we ran out of bags and had to stop. It was hard work without a break but worth doing for those less fortunate than ourselves.

By the end we packed 75,385 meals, with each bag capable of feeding up to 6 people, so over 450,000 will be fed from the day.

Last picture shows the filled bags being loaded onto a lorry to take to the storage depot.

Rise Against Hunger gets food and life-saving aid to the world’s most vulnerable people, and works to end global hunger in our lifetime. Established in 1998, they have provided over 225 million meals in 73 countries.
