From Curry’s to Dough!
On Wednesday 15th August members and guests of Stonehouse Rotary Club were provided with a very interesting and entertaining talk provided by Richard Apperley, who has recently become a member of Stonehouse Rotary Club.
Richard is well known in the local area, as being the former proprietor of Apperley’s bakers located in Stonehouse high Street. Although now retired from the bakery, Richard remains very busy in various activities including, voluntary work at the WWF trust at Slimbridge.
Richard explained how despite his initial management training for high street electrical retailer Curry’s in the 1960’s, a career in baking was his true vocation, supporting his father in a newly acquired baker’s business in Stonehouse. Despite earlier poor fortunes in the Stonehouse bakery, the business was turned around to be a successful operation.
Entertaining stories of various experiences in dealing with the public were provided, together with the challenges of very heavy wedding cakes! Richards’ time in baking was clearly very successful, with appointments in the Baking professional body, and also teaching assignment’s locally.
Many thanks to Richard for this interesting insight.
Julian Gobey.
