A group of Rotarians and guests enjoyed a very interesting visit to Standhill Farm on Thursday. Mr Jim Shanks, ably assisted by his parents, Jim and Annie Shanks, explained in detail the development of the commercial tomato production in his 4-acre glasshouse which produces some 750 tons of tomatoes annually.
Having sampled some of the produce, the group then moved on to an explanation of the 200kilowatt biogas plant which generates electricity, heat and co2 to support the tomato-growing enterprise.
Jim and his wife Kerry then joined the group, along with other members who had been unable to join the visit, for a meal at Mansfield House Hotel after which Jim gave a further insight into the farming enterprise at Standhill and answered a wide variety of questions from his audience.
Everyone was highly impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment to the local economy of this dedicated local farmer. President Mairhi Trickett gave the vote of thanks and handed over a donation for Hawick Saxhorn Band, of which Jim is an enthusiastic member.
