A summary of our activities in July and August

The new Rotary year got off to a very good start with a Handover Dinner at Hall Farm well attended by Rotarians and partners. Retiring President Mike Bull handed the chain of office to me and I duly inducted all the other officers for another year. Nicky Bull likewise handed the chain of President's Lady to my wife, Jo.  In particular I was pleased to appoint John Norman, our new Secretary, into this important post. All the other officers agreed to serve for another year.  Hall Farm restaurant are to be congratulated on efficiently serving up a nice 3-course dinner once again well organised by Roger Cropp.

Our new Council held their first meeting within days and then it was off to Lincoln for a visit to the new Bomber Command memorial to remember the 65,000 airman who lost their lives during World War 2. Their names are alli nscribed on the memorial and it is very shocking to realise that a similar number of American military died during the whole of the Vietnamese war.  Thank you Philip Lumley for organising this trip.

On 19th July we held our Charity Golf Tournament at Kenwick Park and this time the weather was kind to us and didn't rain. This is our major fundraising event of the year and is therefore very important to us. Once again this was very successful both socially and financially with a similar result to last year.  Many thanks once again to Stuart Falconer and Dennis Dunn for their whole-hearted  support for this popular event.

The final event in this busy month was the Grimsby Fun Run and 10k race when we supplied 14 stewards. This was a big event with road closures causing some disruption and requiring great tact on our part!  Nevertheless about 5000 runners took part and the Club earned £500 from 'Tape to Tape,'  the grateful organisers.

In  August we held the President's Garden Party at the Waltham Windmill Golf Club in a departure from the normal tradition. Drinks and canapes were served on the lawn followed by a delicious buffet of cold meats and fish and most importantly the weather stayed dry!

Finally we manned a stall at the North Thoresby Forties Weekend for two days over the Bank Holiday weekend celebrating the founding of the RAF 100 years ago.

It was agreed by Council and approved by the club that a bench costing £300 be donated to the Child Development Centre at the Grimsby Hospital. We have supported the centre for several years by working in their garden and that is where the bench will be situated.  We have also given £650 to the Grimsby Youth Orchestra for a new PA system which they desperately need for their public performances. Grimsby has a thriving musical heritage and it is important to encourage young people to participate in this.

With kind regards to you all.
