Mon 12th Nov – 6pm – Alan McLachlan from Food Train explained the work of the organisation which has 32 local volunteers. He also told us about their new meal makers project which is recruiting people to visit old people and cook them a meal. As well as ensuring a good meal the visit has a big impact on relieving loneliness. Do we know anyone who could volunteer as a cook?
Mon 19th Nov – 1pm - Neil Fraser provided an interesting talk about his childhood in Sri Lanka.
Mon 26th Nov – 6pm – Karen Anderson, who joined us a few months ago, gave her autobiographical talk. She told us how she was brought up in Darvel before moving to Brussels where she attended the British School. She has a history of working in the voluntary sector and is presently working as the Community Activities Organiser for Alzheimer Scotland. Karen, who is an excellent fund raiser, has some interesting ideas on how Rotary should present itself in the community.
Poppy Collections at Morrisons
The local branch of the British Legion was unable to undertake the annual poppy collection at Morrisons this year but we stepped into the breech. We manned a table in the stores with 26 members helping over 6 days.
They distributed countless short stem poppies, 100 long stem poppies, 3000 celebration poppies as well as 100 small wooden crosses and 100 car stickers. Their efforts, and the generosity of the public, raised£3,806.
Many thanks to Jock Smith for making the arrangements which ran with military precision. Many thanks also to Morrisons who were very supportive.
Community Service Award
We are looking for nominations for this Award.
New members
We are keen to recruit new members. Please advise Gary Small of any suitable candidates.
Visit by Canadian Curlers
We recently entertained a party of Canadian Rotarians who were on a curling tour of
Scotland.
Hopefully we will have a more detailed report with photos in our next edition.
Rugby
Our group of supporters and friends make good use of their season tickets to watch Glasgow Warriors. All of our group of 10 renewed their season tickets and were joined by 2 new supporters bringing us up to 12.
They make their tickets available to Club members for individual matches which they themselves are unable to attend. In particular 2 of our supporters are unavailable for quite a few matches as they are working for spells in the Middle East. It is essential that Tom Mitchell is contacted at an early stage before spares are offered to others.
Contact Tom Mitchell if you are interested in attending any match..
