Litter Pick - Duke of York Gardens

Sat, Mar 2nd 2019 at 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Rotarians supported Grimsby in Bloom at their litter pick at Duke of York Gardens as part of this year's Rotary Club Environmental programme.

Many Hands

Many hands made light work of the litter pick at Duke of York Gardens by the River Freshney.  Fourteen Rotarians along with other volunters from the community met at the pavilion for a safety briefing from Grimsby in Bloom.  Armed with PVC gloves, litter picking poles and black bags we toured the terrain in search of anything that had been carelessly discarded.  I think we all managed to fill at least one black bag with bottles, cans and even some unmentionables, making a visible difference to the whole area.

Freshney River Banks

Due to safety concerns, Rotarians were not allowed to stray onto the river banks where most of the larger items were located.  However, some suitably equiped persons from Grimsby in Bloom were able to remove a couple of barrow loads of junk including a children's scooter and a computer  with the aid of ropes and a grappling hook.

Pavilion

We were finished in just over an hour when we retired to the pavilion garden to enjoy hot refreshments.  Grimsby in Bloom are doing a very impressive job of renovating the pavilion which will contain a cafe and toilets.  They have taken over the maintenance of this and the surrounding garden from the council and opened it for use by the local community.  Supporters of Grimsby in Bloom are invited to the opening of the Pavilion Cafe on Saturday 30 March between 11am and 2pm.
