Cambuslang Rotary Club held their annual Burns Supper on Saturday 19th Jan 2019 at the Kings Park Hotel. It was a sell out occasion with around 150 Rotarians friends and family joining together to celebrate the life of Rabbie Burns.
As the guests arrived they were greeted by piper John Paton and then once everyone was seated the haggis was piped in and addressed in spirted style by Kenny Wilson. The staff of the Kings Park served an excellent 3 course meal followed by coffee and a wonderful selection of cheeses.
After a short break to sell raffle tickets the second half of the evening commenced with 'A Song or Twa' from local lass Anna Heywood who as always impressed everyone with her beautiful voice.
The Immortal Memory was given by Rod MacCowan who had his audience enthralled with his combination of wit and serious reflection and his speech was truely memorable! More laughter ensued when Kenny Wilson returned in his nightgown, to perform Holy Willie's Prayer. Kenny is a Past President of the club and his recitations are always one of the highlights of the clubs Burns Suppers.
The speeches continued with Alastair McFarlane, another Past President of the club, who gave the toast to 'The Lassies' and Hilary McDougall (another local lass) who replied on behalf of the ladies. Again both speakers had the audience in fits of laughter as they traded 'gentle' insults!
The evening concluded with the vote of thanks from Kenny Finnie and then everyone joined in singing Auld Lyne Syne before reluctantly making their way homewards.
This is the Cambuslang Rotary Clubs 50th anniversary year so it was particularly fitting that the Burns Supper raised a record amount of £2250. This money will be distributed to a variety of charities supported by the club.
The club would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make it such a successful event.
