Council at 5.45 and then Business Meeting

Members discuss Club's activities

Last week's gathering of Hawick Rotarians was preceded by a meeting of the Club's Council, and then took the form of a Business meeting which heard and approved that group's recommendations. The principal focus was on donations being made by the International Committee: to the charities 500 Miles (£750) and On Call Africa (£300), and to the Disasters Emergency Committee's East Africa Appeal which will benefit to the amount of £600. Locally, Hawick in Bloom will receive £100. The Club did consider whether to purchase more crocus bulbs, of the type which have been such a great show along Weensland Road this Spring, but chose to use the funds to support Hawick in Bloom instead.

As part of the Business meeting, the visiting District Governor Elect Jo Pawley, from the Eyemouth Club, spoke of the District Conference at Aviemore in October, to which 11 local members will be going. She encouraged members to attend, describing a programme of events which will highlight projects being supported by Rotary both within Britain and abroad. One such is Shelterbox, which provides emergency kits to a value of over £600 each to disaster locations across the globe. She raised a smile by speaking of the Shelterbox Challenge, which crops up when a box is emptied to demonstrate its contents and then proves impossible to repack within the box, so fully is the space within used!
