·       increase the provision of working hearing loop systems in businesses, shops and public buildings in and around Stroud

·       create better awareness in local businesses, shops and facilities to make sure their staff understand the needs of hearing aid users and provide services accessible to them

Hearing loop best practice

Why should I provide a hearing loop for my service users?

Not only are you required to by Law, it is also good customer practice. If you make your goods and services accessible to hearing aid wearers you are likely to provide a better service to your customers and provide your business with an additional revenue stream. Three out of four people with disabilities have walked away from businesses – including supermarkets, high street shops, banks, restaurants and transport companies – due to a lack of disability awareness and poor service.

What type of hearing loop would I need?

There are various loops for different applications; service counter hearing loops are different from meeting room hearing loops. It is important that you find a hearing loop specialist who will provide you with the correct equipment.

What is the likely cost and is the installation expensive/disruptive?

A service counter hearing loop will cost around £100-£120excl VAT, room hearing loops will be more expensive depending on the size of the room. Loop installation is not normally disruptive.

Where can I obtain a hearing loop?

You should obtain your hearing loop from a specialist loop supplier, such as Connevans.

Am I under legal obligation to offer this?

Yes, the Equality Act legislation requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments, providing the appropriate Induction loop equipment is deemed to be making reasonable adjustments.

Equality Act 2010 Legislation

How do I ensure my staff can operate the system?

It is important that staff are shown how to use the loop, in particular new staff as part of their induction training. Someone should have responsibility to ensure that the battery is kept charged at all times, as without a charged battery the loop cannot be used.

Does a loop need regular maintenance?

Yes, normally an annual visit will provide the appropriate level of maintenance support. Let’s Hear Stroud can test your Hearing Loop to let you know if it is working correctly and your signage is in the correct position.

How do I promote accessibility of my service, and demonstrate I have installed a hearing loop?

Fitting the correct signage is very important, also advertising the fact that you are providing the service for example on your website. There should be a Loop Sign showing on the outside of the premises and on the inside by the service counter/desk.

I have taken the decision to install a loop

Congratulations, your business is now having the opportunity to increase its trade by advertising that you have a Hearing Loop available for your customers. You will be meeting the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 for hearing loss.

Please let Stroud Rotary know that you have now got a loop and we will come and test it for you and check your signage. We will give you a report and include you on Hearing Links database which logs all Hearing Loops that are present in the UK. Our town will over time become known for being a friendly Let’s Hear Stroud.
