The Rotary Club of St Andrews welcomed Lesley Caldwell from the University of St Andrews to their first meeting of 2020.
Lesley was appointed to a pivotal role within the University last year to provide an enhanced focus on the many interactions between the University and the community. With a reporting relationship directly to the Principal, her role provides an excellent channel for communications both to and from the town on the many matters where our interests overlap.
In what is already a very busy programme, Lesley explained that at the heart of their strategic plan there are four core values, environmental matters, giving time and/or money to local causes, supporting ethical business and economics. These will drive the agenda in the coming years.
Whilst acknowledging that there can be concerns with student accommodation, bin use and noise for example, it is important to remember the large amount of charitable work carried out by students each year, both in terms of time given and donations, within the town and beyond.
In the Q&A session Lesley was reminded of the successful relationship between the club and the University at present and was asked to relook at how that might be developed further.
Rotarian, Angela Fowlis provided a warm VOT to Lesley and wished her well, in this key role for the town and the University.
