Presidential Handover

How to hand over a Presidential chain of office while socially distanced? That was the challenge facing John Christie when his year as President of the Rotary Club of St Andrews ended on 1 July. He solved it by hanging the chain on the end of a golf club, which he then held out to his successor, Hamish Tait. But the passing on, of this and other offices, normally takes place at a full Club meeting; so how to solve this second challenge? John and Hamish cracked that one by filming their handover, and the transfer of other badges of office, out of doors. In the case of incoming Vice-President, Colin Mitchell, the filming took place on his farm, watched by a bemused herd of cattle! The film was then shown as part of the Club’s virtual meeting, by Zoom.
Before the screening, President John thanked everyone in the Club, especially its other office bearers, for the support they had given him, as a relatively new member. All could be proud of what had been achieved, including the Club’s financial support for the local community in response to the Corona epidemic. Hamish Tait complimented John on the energy, good humour and innovativeness that had characterised his presidency, adding that he would certainly be a hard act to follow.
One of John’s last acts as President was the induction – also virtually – of new member, Daphne Bilouri-Grant. Daphne is already well-known to many St Andreans, as a trustee of Fife Women’s Aid, which she chairs, and of the St Andrews Community Trust, and as one of the founders of CASA, Community Aid St Andrews. Her commitment to the Rotary ideal of service to others is not in doubt.
