BREAKFAST

Recent Events:

Ron mentioned the Board meeting last Thursday.  He reminded members about registering for the Conference Dinner on the Saturday, 7th September.  This is a black tie do.  Andre B said it’s not just the Dinner, members should feel encouraged to attend the whole week end.  Kathy said you can register separately for the lecture on Friday which is being delivered by a high-ranking person from the navy.

Ron said that the Board discussed making a donation to the charity Honey Bears of perhaps £250.  This needs to be voted on by the membership at a breakfast meeting.  However we have a lot of members away this week, so we may take a vote next Thursday.  Ron indicated that he will adopt Honey Bears, and SNAAP, as his charities during his presidential year.

Three members (Ron, Paul and Dave C) will be going to sea on Saturday, on the restored gunboat at Sandwich.

Treasurer

David M gave a reminder about ordering Rotary clothing.  A picture of ladies’ Rotary scarves has been circulated.  David said that the Board had discussed having printed copies of a car window sticker displaying Rotary’s part in eliminating polio.  He passed round a sheet with three examples on it.  The meeting was asked to indicate which one they preferred.  Some discussion about whether we could get a larger order and sell them from the stall at the car parking?  Pete questioned whether the larger example would be quite legal, or whether it would obscure the driver’s view.  Ron proposed we get a supply of each of the examples to sell at Quiz Night.

Foundation

Pat M referred to Theresa May’s speech in Parliament in which she thanked Rotary International for its role in eliminating polio.

International

Andrew said that at the Board meeting it had been proposed to have the Apeldoorn visit any date in May 2020, apart from 20th May.

The next gardening day at the Whit and Tank hospital will need to clear the neglected central area.  This will require a numerous band of volunteers.  Kathy said the date for this will be Saturday 5th October.  In response to a question, Andrew said yes, SERCO do do some work around the W & T, but they are not allowed to spray weed killer anywhere.  We can get away with this in the central area because it doesn’t get much footfall.

P & R

Robert S reminded everyone who has any photos of interesting activities to post them on our Face book page.

Youth Opportunities

Owain said that since it’s the school holidays, he didn’t have anything new to report.

Car Parking

Godfrey said that our next car park day is Sunday 15th September.  There are not many names down in the folder, and we are in danger of having to cancel the day.  Could more people volunteer, please?

Fundraising

Dave reiterated the call for raffle prizes for the Golf Day, and also for the Quiz Night in November.  Nick said that there remain three holes needing sponsors for the Golf Day.  Two more went during the discussion, so now only one remains unsponsored.

Social

Nick said the Bat & Trap next Friday week, 23rd August, is well supported – 14 names from Chestfield; 10 from Canterbury Sunrise; 10 from Herne Bay, 2 from Whitstable.  It will cost £8.50 for the buffet, which will start from 9.00pm.

A new item, yet to appear in the folder, will be a visit to the Ramsgate Tunnels, followed by a meal (optional) at the big Wetherspoons opposite the Tunnels.  We will meet at 4.00pm.  Cost is £4.00 for the Tunnels.  Car parking can be a problem in Ramsgate ‘though.  We need 15 names to qualify for the group rate.

Godfrey said another new event which can go in the folder will be a visit to the Escape Room in Canterbury, proposed for Tuesday 15th October.  He asked for a show of hands to indicate members’ interest

Godfrey also said that he is planning to host an evening meal at his house on Saturday 30th November.  This will be catered by his daughter who is a chef.

Kathy talked about an evening group visit to Whitstable Museum, followed by nibbles.  This will be Thursday 3rd October at 6.00pm.  It will cost £5.00.  There will be a sheet in the folder later.

Membership

Ron said that he has links with two local choirs, with a membership of about 45, plus partners.  His plan is to create a link between them and Rotary by sponsoring two of the holes at the Golf Day – then see if we can get some new members thereby.

Visits / Greetings from other Clubs

            None today

David asked about which car sticker re polio was the preferred one (now that the sample had done the rounds)?  Suggestion that we have 100 of the small roundel, and 50 each of the two others.  Nick came up with the idea that we find a friendly car dealer and ask if a polio roundel could be stuck in each new car sold during October (24th October is World Polio Day).  We could ask for a voluntary contribution, and in any case it would publicise the club.

Raffle

Jean aid she has only one bottle of wine left.  She needs more people to donate prizes.  Rob S won the bottle of wine; Andrew B won the biscuits.

Master-at-Arms

Today is Cycle to Work Day, and also Lemon Meringue Day.

Any Other Business

Pat M said that she will be the Meals Steward for five weeks from 29th August, Lesley being away.  Tell Pat by 5.00pm on the Tuesday if you can’t make it to breakfast on Thursday.

Dave C commented on the article about Mercy Ships in the latest Rotary magazine; he attended a very interesting talk about the latter this last Monday.  Andrew B said that we have had a visit from someone connected with them a while back, and we did support them as a charity.

Final Toast

            Reggie did this.
