Minutes of the Business Meeting

Held on Thursday, February 27th  2020

                                             At The Golf Club, Chestfield

Birthday Greetings:

            To Nick who slips ever further into the ranks of the deserving elderly.

            To former members John Bishop and Robert Macfarlane; the latter will be 14 on     February 29th.

Andrew Brealy:

            Many condolences to Andrew on the loss of his father.

Lesley Robertson:

            Lesley is recovering well from her operation and hopes to be back next week.

Board Meeting, Thursday, February 13th:

            The minutes of the recent Board meeting have been circulated.

Presidency:

   Ron will definitely not be able to stand as President for 2020/2021 and it was          agreed to share the role between Past Presidents on a monthly basis should a     volunteer not be forthcoming.

Meeting to Discuss Satellite Club, Tuesday, February 18th:

            Ten members attended the meeting at the Marine Hotel which was the largest          contingent of any of the local clubs represented.

Guest Breakfast:

            The Guest Breakfast scheduled for February 13th was something of a failure – no    guests!    It is planned to hold another sometime in May or June but everyone was also encouraged to invite guests to any forthcoming Club event.

The Old Forge and Wartime House, Sittingbourne:

   Nick will put to the meeting a possible trip to the Old Forge and Wartime House       in Sittingbourne which is open for group visits in the evening with a minimum of             20 participants at £8.00 per person including tea or £10.00 per person if a talk            and demonstration is included.        This was agreed but Nick stressed that            everyone who put up their hands should take part as it is essential to have a           group of at least 20 if the trip is to go ahead.     It was also agreed to open up the     trip to RC Whitstable and RC Herne Bay if sufficient numbers are not           forthcoming from the Club.     A form will be put in the folder as soon as      Nick can confirm a date.

Master of Alms:

            Nick proposed to the meeting once his target for the year had been achieved that    any subsequent funds from Master of Alms be diverted to the Club account.   This        was agreed.

Mercy Ships:

            The Rotary campaign to raise funds to fit out the new ship being built for Mercy      Ships has been a huge success.      David M. has paid over the £500.00      contribution agreed by the Club.

Gloria Barnett, Book for Schools:

Gloria Barnett is a member of RC Canterbury Sunrise and she has produced a book for schools highlighting the serious problem of plastic in the oceans.    The price of the book is £5 per copy. David M. proposed to the Club that it buy 120 copies to present to the schools taking part in Walk 4 Water which the author will sign.   This was agreed.

Meningitis Research:

A Jessica Slade Rack plans to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Meningitis Research.     Ron proposed that the Club donate £50.00 to her campaign and to invite her to speak to the Club on her return.    This was agreed.

Friday, February 28th, Ten-pin Bowling with Meal at Mucini’s:

            The next ten-pin bowling will be on Friday, February 28th followed by a         meal afterwards at Mucini’s. 

Sunday, March 1st, Car Parking:

            Godfrey now has sufficient volunteers for car parking on Sunday, March 1st.

Friday, March 6th, Table Tennis Evening:

            Thirteen have signed up for the evening which will cost £10.00 per head inclusive   of nibbles.     There is still time to sign up.

Sunday, March 8th, Chestfield Village Litter Pick:

            This is a chance for the Club to show its support Chestfield Village but so far only    three have signed up.   There is a form in the folder and still time to sign up.        

Thursday, March 12th, Speaker Graham Bough:

            The speaker at the morning meeting on Thursday, March 12th will be Graham           Bough, Treasurer, Canterbury Food Bank.

Friday, March 13th, Kent College Interact Murder Mystery Evening:

            Please sign up for the Kent College Interact Murder Mystery Evening on Friday,       March 13th at 7.00 for 7.30 pm at the college on Whitstable Road,                    Canterbury, CT2 9DT.    The cost will be £10.00 per person but         bring your own         food and drink.  

Saturday, March 14th, RC Herne Bay Race Night:

            Nine members have signed up to go and have places.    [It is understood that the      event is now fully booked.]

Friday, March 20th, Walk4Water:

            Walk4Water will be on Friday, March 20th when approximately 120    children          will be walking at the University Sports Centre. David M. has circulated details to             everyone who has signed up but numbers are tight so he needs everyone to turn             up.  Hilary is organising a lunch afterwards at the Royal Oak, Blean and            details will be available soon.

Thursday, March 26th, Raid by RC Minster:

            RC Minster are planning to break out from the Isle of Sheppey and raid the Club      at an evening meal on Thursday, March 26th at the Golf Club at 7.00 for 7.30 pm.                  Those of us who went to them recently were made very welcome and had a       thoroughly enjoyable evening.      The cost of the meal will be £17.50 per person           and guests are welcome.    The menu will be a starter of baked brie with a red             onion marmalade followed by a main course of baked cod.    This will be a    regular meeting of the Club and everyone is expected to attend unless they      apologise in the usual way.

            More help is needed.    There is a form in the folder, please sign up.

Thursday, May 7th, Evening Meal, Speaker Mark Harrison:

            There will be an evening meeting on Thursday, May 7th when the speaker will be     Mark Harrison, the local historian who will be talking about the Tankerton Boat,         Mark has spoken to the Club before and this is sure to be an interesting           evening.

Saturday, May 9th, Pat and Sue’s SkyDive:

            See Pat and Sue come down in the world when they will be SkyDiving at        Headcorn Aerodrome, Headcorn, Ashford, TN27 9HX on Saturday, May 9th to   raise funds for Alzheimers Research, Hi Kent and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

   Please sponsor them.   David M. has set up a special Sky Dive account for                   donations (Sort Code: 60-10-37    Account No:  13679740    Account Name:   Sky            Dive Acct.       David has also produced a poster (attached) so please arrange for it       to be put up wherever you have an opportunity.

Thursday, May 21st, Speaker Emma Slade:

            Emma and Sue Hills will be visiting the Club on Thursday, May 21st and will speak    on the latest events in Bhutan where Open Your Heart to Bhutan is about to            inaugurate its second school.

Saturday, May 30th, Barn Dance:

            The Barn Dance in aid of Alzheimers Research, Hi Kent and Hearing Dogs for the     Deaf will be held in All Saints Church Hall on Saturday, May 30th with music and             dance provided by the Royster Catchers Ceilidh Band.    Tickets are now on sale at         £20.00 per person.   Numbers are limited to sixty so please sign up soon.    David           has also produced a poster (attached) so please arrange for it to be put up        wherever you have an opportunity.

Sunday, July 26th, Herne and Broomfield Fun Day:

            Although this is some way off, Andrew needs to let the organisers know soon that   the Club can take on the parking and he needs more volunteers.    There is a form          in the folder, please sign up.

Visitors and Greetings:

            David M. brought greetings from former member Sue Hollamby and Norman her    husband.

Raffle:

            Andrew M.  won a bottle of wine and Ron made a move on a box of chocolates.

Master of Alms:

   Birthday boy was at it again.
