Guests invited. Speaker Phil Newman of Skomer Marine Conservation Area
Skomer Marine Conservation Zone
The Fishguard and Goodwick Rotary Club held their monthly evening meeting on Thursday 14th November. The speaker was Phil Newman from Skomer Marine Conservation Zone. He gave a fascinating presentation on all the life beneath the sea in the conservation area, which is particularly rich due to all the different habitats. He also discussed the challenges facing those looking after the zone. How sea fans, which take decades to grow, can easily be destroyed by lobster pot lines or fishing lines. Plastic bottles and cans also land up on the sea bed. The public have been made aware of these problems by Sir David Attenborough and the Rotary Movement in South Wales have become involved in cleaning up operations. Rotarian Richard Goswell gave the vote of thanks and asked what action the club could take to assist in protecting the conservation zone.
Also present at the meeting was Bejamin from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who was guest of David and Jenny Annis
