Weekly Meeting at Oake Manor Golf Club

Mon, Jul 8th 2019 at 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Speaker from Crimestoppers

27 members enjoyed dinner at Oake Manor before listening to a presentation by the CEO of CrimeStoppers, Mark Hallas.

Mark, who previously had a career in the army, ending as Director of the Intelligence Corps and the UK’s Defence Intelligence training schools, has been in his present role for 6 years.

CrimeStoppers, an independant charity and not to be confused with the BBC TV Crimewatch programme, operates a 24/7 call centre ( 0800 555 111 ) which receives almost half a million calls each year, virtually one a minute, and far more information is given than the police can possibly use. The 50 call centre staff are all highly trained to identify material that is either urgent or important and as a result UK police forces believe that about 30 thousand crimes are either solved or prevented annually as a result. These range from anti social behaviour, drink driving and tax evasion right through to murder, people trafficking and multi-million pound drug crimes.

CrimeStoppers has developed numerous partnerships - with the prison service (offenders are productive sources), the Post Office for a campaign to help older people avoid being victims of fraud and more recently ‘Fearless’, a campaign designed to help young people stay out of trouble.

Mark answered a wide range of questions from members before the vote of thanks from Phil Greenway.

Club Business:

Phil Greenway had recently attended the Young People’s Showcase. He will make a full report at a later date.

President Kathryn read a letter of resignation from Charter member and former Club President Brian Kettlewell (due to family health reasons). A tribute to his club service since 1981 was given by Henry Besley.

The recent Golf day raised over five and a half thousand pounds. Thanks and congratulations to all involved.

Our skittles team has reached the District final. Richard Goring encouraged as many as possible to support them in the final against Bradford on Avon. It’s being staged at West Pennard, nr Glastonbury on Thursday 18th July. Contact Richard G for car sharing.

There is still an urgent need for members to serve on the Communications Committee. Members of the Breakfast Club are particularly encouraged to share their knowledge of Social Media.

It has become clear that Nykvarn and Redon clubs would prefer next year’s 3 club meeting to be Thursday 21st May – Sunday 24th to coincide with Public Holidays in both France and Sweden (that is a week later than we originally proposed).

Future Programme –

Next week, 15th at Oake, speaker Justin Roxburgh from ARC Inspire (Taunton’s Homeless Support Charity). Partners and Inner Wheelers are invited – As usual, 2 will be assumed as attending unless otherwise notified. (If you’ve already signed a board indicating attendance numbers or apology – that will be included, but all others contact David Janes in the usual way.) DR Ian Harkness, SF Malcolm Turner.

July 22nd. At SCCC - Committee Reports and Business Meeting. DR Mike Hill.

The Ball Draw was won by Paul Hughes but no Joker so a roll over - £160 next week.
