Rayleigh Age Concern based at The Todman Centre ” in Castle Road, Rayleigh runs an “Over 55’s Lunch Club” that provides varied and tasty “Home Cooked Style” meals on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to some of the older people of Rayleigh and the surrounding area.
The Centre relies on not just the enthusiastic support of the many volunteers from the Rayleigh Churches, but also from Rochford Council, various local charities and Rayleigh Service Clubs.
The Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill were looking for projects where they could provide practical help as well as the many projects where they make financial donations. The trustees of the Todman Centre indicated that the main hallway to the Centre was a little tired and jaded and was in need of refreshing.
Volunteers from Hope Church, Rayleigh formed a work party to strip off the old wallpaper and prepare the walls and members of the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill gave the hallway a coat of paint to freshen up and brighten the entrance to the hall.
Jackie Wellman, President of the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill, said “The members of our club are always happy to help organisations like the “over 55’s Lunch Club” that do such an important job in fostering the sense of community in Rayleigh. In this case, the lunch club does such a good job of not only providing attractive, reasonably priced meals, but also offers an opportunity for older people to get out of their homes, get together for a social chat and avoid the isolation and loneliness that some may suffer in later life. Our club enjoys projects like this, as getting together as a team like this provides some of the camaraderie that the club used to share when we organised the“Concert in the Park” in Southend.
