Tonight we hear a very relevant Talk on 'The Business of Running a Care Home' from manager James Chandler.

James is Community Development Manager for TLC Cambridge Manor - a new and well respected home catering for a range of physical and mental health needs related to aging.  This residential home is an example of the many care settings this expanding company offers. After experiencing dementia care needs in his own family and recognising the importance of caring and quality settings for a burgeoning part of the population James decided to move from the Financial sector into the care sector.

He shared with us the latest statistics on the rise of dementia and physical dependency problems that are becoming more and more common in our community. With the population rising and people generally living longer, but not necessarily more healthily than before, there is an increasing demand that is not being met.  The financial balance of homes is a difficult one to achieve as government support does not match up to the expensive staffing levels and the training required and expected.

We were very interested to hear more about this subject which will touch most of us either personally of through relatives and friends. Clearly we need to plan carefully for the future now we know the realities involved.

It was lovely to get news of our honorary member John Sterland who is still enjoying his violin playing and many a stimulating conversation. James assures us he will bring John along to the October Girton Memory Cafe, if his health allows it.  He was very complementary about our Cafe and all the joy it brings and strongly encourages us to continue for as long as possible !!
