Dougie was invited to join our club as its first Associate member, to mark his continued support for Operation Smile.

Douglas Fisher gives £600 to RC of Furness

Earlier in the year our club had a visit from Douglas Fisher, a pensioner from Walney Island.

Each year the Rotary Club of Furness sends money to a little known charity called Operation Smile who perform surgical operations in the third world to correct cleft palates in children. A child with a cleft palate is shunned in some societies, so correcting it can be life changing.

We started contributing in 2013 when Dave Ward was our club president for the second time round (he was previously president as well in 1998). The cost has been constant over the years, £150 to cover a cleft palate correction operation. It was a project he favoured and when our involvement was publicised, Douglas Fisher noticed it and decided he would also like to help by matching our funding.

From 2013 Douglas has matched our donations, but for this visit, he eclipsed what had grown to an annual £300 donation to a whopping £600! With matched funding from the Club, that will allow Operation Smile to give smiles back to 8 children!

Our current club president Brian Boyd had already decided to mark Douggie’s involvement by making him our first ever Associate Member, a well deserved reward for his constant support and generosity.
