Andy Kelly introduces new member Janet Steele

On Thursday 18th July the Club was proud to welcome Janet Steele, a former member of Paterson Rotary Club in Australia. Janet was introduced by Andy Kelly and warmly welcomed by President Georgeann Martin, Secretary Ralph Anderson and attending members.

There was no annual service this year but President Georgeann was joined by Billy Shields to lay a wreath in memory of the merchant seamen buried there, in particular from the SS Coronda, SS Empire Dorado, SS British Glory, Matroos KV and SS Empire Cloud.

The Club held their annual car boot sale on 2nd September 2018 on the Rothesay Promenade. The weather was kind and the event well supported by both stall holders and purchasers.

On 12th September 2019 the Club were pleased to welcome the 2018-2019 School captains Abigail Clifford and Abigail Brooks together with Head of Campus Louise Nicol. The girls talked about the highlights of their year followed by a lively discussion.

Members met on the evening of 30th May to contest the annual Putting Competition to win the prestigious 'Claret Mug'.

The Club were pleased to welcome District Governor Jim Ross making his "formal" visit. Jim, a member of the Dunoon Club, is well known in Rothesay and members and guests enjoyed hearing about his aspirations for his year in office.

The Club held their Scottish Night combined with the presentation of a Community Service Award to Jean McMillan the volunteer Librarian/ Archivist at Bute Museum.

On 11th July members gathered at Craigmore Bowling Club on a warm sunny evening to try their hands at bowling with expert tuition from former member Hugh Yeamans. Winners were Jim Findlay and Ronnie Falconer.

A successful 'Tartan Tammie' Scottish Night was held on 28th January 2021. Over 35 members and guests joined in and to give a truly Scottish flavour several sported a Tartan Tammy and most wore something tartan.

Members and friends were guests of Bute Clay Target Club for an enjoyable evening in warm sunshine. Beginners learned new skills but experience told.

The Club held a very successful Scottish Night at the Victoria Hotel, Rothesay. Stewart Shaw addressed the Haggis and John Weir proposed the toast to Scotland. Music was provided by Jimmy Duncan, John Morrison and Meg Young.

The Club celebrated their 70th Birthday on 3rd September with some bowling followed by refreshments and a piece of birthday cake. Our thanks to Craigmore Bowling Club for organising an enjoyable socially distanced evening.

The Club held a very successful Quiz Night at Craigmore Bowling Club on 3rd November. Over £700 was raised for rotary charities. The winning team was led by Isobel Smith seen here receiving the team prize from Kim Findlay, wife of President Jim Findlay.

The Club took much pleasure in presenting Dictionaries4Life to all primary seven pupils at our three primary schools, North Bute, Rothesay Primary and St. Andrews Primary marking the transition to secondary school.

On 7th January 2021 Allan talked on Zoom about his hobby for many years of photographing planets, features of the moon, nebula and far off galaxies. He described the equipment he used and some secrets of his success. A lively discussion followed the talk.

Club Members and friends held a very enjoyable murder/mystery evening. Much effort had been put into the costumes and there was a lot of laughter as the plot unfolded to identify the maid as the guilty party.
