Youth Speaks 2019-2020

Public speaking, be it a presentation at University, for an interview, to a sport or interest group or at work to a group of colleagues or prospective clients is often one of the most daunting things we have to do.

The Youth Speaks competition gives participants a chance to build their confidence and develop their communication skills with a view to future challenges.
  • put into practice the skills they learn at school
  • develop self confidence and a sense of achievement
  • work as a team
  • develop research skills
  • be creative and use their imagination
  • present ideas, express opinions and give reasoned arguments
  • express their ideas in front of an unknown audience
  • communicate in a set time
Intermediate: Usually school years 7 to 9.( 11 to 13 years)

Senior: Usually school years 10 to 13.(14 to 17 years)

With the age qualifying date of 31 August 2019, it should be noted that some intermediate entrants may be 14 and senior entrants 18 at the time of some or all stages of the competitions (e.g. a competitor who is 17 on 31 August but turns 18 on 1 September is allowed to enter).

Working in a team of three, participants have the opportunity to research, formulate ideas and discuss the topics that are important to them.

The competition culminates in an exciting national final and is open to young people in two age groups: Intermediate (11-13 years) and Senior (14-17 years).

Rotary clubs must advise the District competition organiser of their intention to participate in the Youth Speaks competition by Friday 20th September 2019

Local: A local competition organised by Rotary Clubs. These should be held before 11th December 2019. Winners go to District Semi-Finals.
