The Donkey Sanctuary

Not just about rescuing donkeys, but providing Donkey-Assisted Therapy to children with additional needs.

In 1969, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE started what was to become the Donkey Sanctuary, fifty years on, her legacy has enabled them to take 20,000 donkeys into their care.

A representative from the Leeds Donkey Sanctuary gave a talk to the club. He told us about Donkey-Assisted Therapy. Initially, a programme focused on children with additional needs, but over the past four decades the demand for a programme that could help adults and children with a wide range of emotional, psychological and cognitive needs became apparent.

As a consequence they are building on the solid foundation established over four decades and further developing what they aim to be a cutting edge programme, focusing on developing key life skills such as self-esteem, managing emotions and empathy.

The Club gave a donation to the Donkey Sanctuary.
