A summary of our activities from April to June

The last three months of the Rotary year seem to have gone by very quickly but we still found a variety of activities for members to get involved in.

Charter Dinner

At the beginning of April we held our annual Charter Dinner to celebrate the birthday of our club 88 years ago. District Governor Nigel Arthurs attended with his wife as did Assistant District Governor Jim Walker and his wife and they were both complimentary about the success and friendliness of our club. Our local MP Martin Vickers was due to come as our guest speaker right up to the last minute but the political demands in London prevented him from attending. He sent a sent a letter wishing our club a very happy birthday!  I tried to fill this gap with the political satire of Gilbert & Sullivan but the day was really saved by our entertainments officer, Roger Cropp, who gave away the lovely table flowers by somehow persuading our ladies to divulge their ages without them realising! Everyone agreed that the new venue of Stallingborough Grange hotel was perfect for this type of event.

Walking Weekend

The next big event was the Social & Walking Weekend held at the Coniston Hotel near Skipton.  38 of us spent a two night stay at this lovely hotel with good food, wine and fellowship. We were really lucky with the perfect weather which made all the difference.  We had a local guide for the main walk and my wife Jo took those who wanted a shorter walk around the beautiful lake. For the first time in memory everyone participated in one these alternatives. For those who needed more exercise a large group of us went to nearby Malham Cove in the afternoon after a buffet lunch where we were lucky to see a peregrine falcon nesting and we were given a lesson in geology from President elect John Clark. This was so popular that John organised a further walk the next day after check-out and 12 hardy walkers joined him.

Charity Shoot

The now annual Rotary shoot was held at the end of May and the weather was kind to us again.  Although we could have accommodated more entrants the event was financially successful and made a useful contribution to the club. Many thanks to Martyn Turner for being the main organiser  once again and for all those who helped on the day.

Community

Our gardening team again managed to tidy up the garden of the Child Development Centre at the General hospital organised by John Lavin, and Nigel Frow led a team of Rotarians to pick up litter in the Duke of York gardens and West Marsh area.

Handover

This is my final newsletter as President Elect John Clark takes on the role of President at the end of the month. I must say it has been a pleasure to have served as your president for the last 12 months and I thank all members for their support. As an ordinary member once more I will continue to support  the club and in particular the new president can count on my wholehearted support.

With Best Wishes to you all.

Chris.
