Seaford Rotary Club’s eighth ‘Seaford Young Musician of the Year’ competition was held on 9th March at Seaford Baptist Church before a large appreciative audience made up mainly of parents and friends. The 18 competitors were aged between 11 and 17 and divided into three groups, Vocal Soloists, Instrumental Soloists, and Ensembles. It was so good to see every competitor standing up on the stage and presenting themselves confidently and, apparently, without any sign of nervousness. It was also very encouraging to find a strong contingent of eleven-year olds taking part.
The eighteen acts ranged from classics to pop and left the judges with the difficult task of finding winners in the three groups as well as choosing an overall winner from the soloists who would receive the Colin Seymour Shield and be invited to be our representative in the District Finals in the Spring of 2020. Once again Damon Willer, our Master of Ceremonies, put the competitors at their ease and kept the programme flowing seamlessly. Our judges, Pat White, Margaret Darwall-Smith and Andrew Daniels, managed to select the very best from the high standard of entrants with the following result:
Overall winner and winner of the Instrumental Soloist group – Esther Clay.
Winner of the vocal Soloist – Blubelle Brinkmann
Winner of the Ensemble group – Seaford Baroque
Runner-up in the Instrumental group – Eva-Jolie Kerswell
In recognition of the high standard achieved by some of the younger players, two prizes, recognising their potential, were given to Elena Basarabeanu (Instrumental), and Seaford Primary Twin Strings, Amy and Philip Huebbe-Nelson (Ensemble).
The prizes and certificates were presented by the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Linda Wallraven and Vice President of the Rotary Club of Seaford, Keith Ross.
The standard of entries was high, and the audience was treated to a joyful display of musical talent. The Rotary Club of Seaford would like to thank all the contestants, the judges, Seaford Baptist Church and its sound technician and the ladies of Seaford Inner Wheel who served the Interval Refreshments. We look forward to the 2020 Competition!
